Tom Abbink (1980. Haarlem, the Netherlands) creates collages, drawings and sculptures wherein elements of his own autobio-graphical voyage of discovery and the realm of science fiction come together to form a unique whole. Abbink plays with the notion that “paradise” was not something created by a God, but rather developed out of an intrinsic human need. Abbinks perspective is one where the vision of “paradise” is a construct; a projection created out of a human desire to be able to put into context their own conscious and subconscious longings in an insecure world. The central theme moving through Abbinks work is mankind; the human being in the midst of dealing with his own creations and the never ending voyage of discovery that these creations lead to.
